Chappell Roan Reveals Her Next Album Is Still Unwritten and May Take ‘At Least 5 Years’ to Complete, leaving fans with a long wait ahead. The rising pop star recently admitted that her highly anticipated follow-up to 2023’s The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess may not arrive anytime soon.

No Album on the Horizon

In a new interview with Vogue published on Monday (Aug. 4), Roan explained that there are no concrete plans for a sophomore LP despite the release of her latest single, The Subway.

“The second project doesn’t exist yet,” she confessed. “There is no album. There is no collection of songs.”

Roan went on to note that her creative process isn’t fast-paced.

“It took me five years to write the first one, and it’s probably going to take at least five to write the next,” she said. “I’m not that type of writer that can pump it out … Even if I was in the studio 12 hours a day, every single day, that does not mean that you would get an album any faster.”

Fans Eager but Waiting

Though this isn’t the first time Roan has mentioned the lengthy wait, many fans hoped her steady release of singles might lead to an album sooner. In August, she dropped the emotional ballad The Subway, following her Billboard Hot 100 top 10 hit The Giver earlier in March. Her breakout single Good Luck, Babe! in 2023 also helped cement her as one of pop’s most exciting new voices.

When announcing her summer pop-up shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York City, Roan admitted she wanted “the chance to do something special before going away to write the next album,” making it clear that the new record is still in its earliest stages.

Following a Grammy-Winning Debut

Her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, released in September 2023, climbed slowly before peaking at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in August 2024. The record also won her first Grammy for Best New Artist, cementing her place among today’s most influential performers.

Finding Balance Beyond Fame

Roan has also spoken openly about the toll fame has taken on her mental health. After addressing toxic fan behaviors earlier this year, she told Vogue that she’s finally learning to strike a balance between her career and her personal well-being. One major step was removing social media apps from her phone.

“I’ve never written an album where I don’t have Instagram or anything,” she explained. “The album process is purely, only mine. No one on TikTok gets to see it.”

While the wait may be long, fans can rest assured that Chappell Roan is taking her time to ensure her next project is worth every moment.
